Dutch Master's Technique?

Well it's been a little mission of mine to try and teach myself how to digitally paint, I think this up to now is the closest I've ever gotten.

I've chose to take the Dutch Master's route and do my greyscale values first to make sure that the correct value's are in place before adding colour. After all this stage is far more important than colour for adding depth, story and composition as well as describing form, following line of course.
